Buddhist Sketchbook pages 20 & 21

Spanning across two pages of the Buddhist Sketchbook, these images may or may not represent a narrative… On the left page, we see the “Inner City”- embodying the Ego, the conscious and structured realm of the masculine psyche. The structures are drawn with precise lines and acute angles, echoing the realm’s order and logic. On the right page unfolds the “Enchanted Forest,” a lush, organic landscape representative of the Anima, the feminine aspect within the male psyche. This drawing is fluid, teeming with exotic creatures, flowing rivers, and towering trees, mirroring the wild, emotional, and creative facets of the unconscious mind. Together, these sketches encapsulate the timeless journey of integration and balance between logic and emotion, conscious and unconscious, masculine and feminine–the essence of Buddhist philosophy and Jungian psychology.

Once upon a time, in the mysterious landscape of the human psyche, there lived a real boy named Ego. Ego was not a boy in the traditional sense, rather he was a metaphor for the conscious, masculine side of an individual. He existed in the realm of logic, order, and perceived reality — what we might call the “Inner City.”

However, deep within the dense, lush wilderness of the unconscious, existed the Amazon Girl. She was the embodiment of emotion, intuition, and the creative spirit—known as the “Enchanted Forest.”

Ego, from his Inner City, often peered into the shadows of the Enchanted Forest, both intrigued and fearful of the mysteries it held. But one day, a beautiful melody drifted from the forest’s edge. It was the Amazon Girl, singing a song of soulful longing. The music stirred something within Ego, a yearning for something more than his structured reality.

Driven by this newfound longing, Ego ventured into the Enchanted Forest. As he journeyed deeper, he encountered mythical creatures and arcane symbols—manifestations of repressed desires, forgotten memories, and untapped potential.

In the heart of the forest, Ego met the Amazon Girl. She was wild and captivating, her essence flowing like the Amazon River. She was the bearer of Ego’s emotions, passions, and creativity—things he had neglected in his Inner City.

Together, they embarked on a quest to unite their two realms. Their journey mirrored the mythological hero’s journey, filled with trials and tribulations, monsters, and revelations. They faced the Hydra of repressed emotions, solved the Sphinx’s riddle of self-understanding, and climbed the World Tree to gain wisdom from the collective unconscious.

Buddhist Edge

In the end, Ego and the Amazon Girl, the Anima, managed to unite their worlds. The structured order of the Inner City started to embrace the chaotic creativity of the Enchanted Forest, leading to a harmonious co-existence. And the Amazon Girl, in return, learned to appreciate the order and structure that Ego provided.
