Cracks of the Future
Diviners would submit questions to deities regarding future. Intense heat was then applied with a metal rod until the bone or shell cracked. The diviner would then interpret the pattern of cracks and inscribe the prognostication.
Diviners smeared blood on their lips before reading the cracks to learn the answer to the divination. How exactly the cracks were interpreted is not known.
The original character for sun was a circle with a dot in the centre, for the moon a crescent and dots. Then the two pictograms were put together to form the ideogram for brightness.
Process
I forgot about the pot of water on the stove while printing out a copy of the ancient Chinese Oracle Bone. I was deeply captured by this mysterious object and spent a long while studying it. The water evaporated and the pot cracked. My attention snapped back, as though from a dream.
After the cracked pot cooled down i moved it aside and found this object. Due to the extreme heat the metal melted and formed into a baby shape underneath. I placed the two objects together into the the sun and took this picture.
